What exactly is the difference…

November12

Between trail walking and a treadmill?  I can do an hour on my treadmill, varying the incline from 4 to 12 percent, walking an average speed of 3.5 mph, and never exhaust my legs like I do when I walk outside.

img_0038bona-deaFor the last few morning, (I should have started earlier, with this gorgeous weather!) I’ve been driving over to the Bona Dea Trails and walking the Walden Way trail, which is 2.6 miles, and takes me fifty minutes at a brisk pace.  I’m hoping to work my way up to the Serendipity trail, it’s 3.5 miles.

It’s a lovely walk, and I hardly see anyone there, in fact this morning I didn’t pass a soul.  I had my iPhone with me, and took this shot of one of the bridges along the way.

I have some bread going, and tonight I plan on grilling chicken breasts and making those wonderful sweet potatoes with garlic and bleu cheese that I tried while Jim was gone, they were quite yummy!

I handed over ownership of the Bernina sewing group I ran, and I’m cutting back on all my groups.  I haven’t been sewing much lately either… while busy as can be, I’m spending far too much time sitting.  Walking feels great!  I hope whatever RV park we stay in down in Louisiana has a nice place for me to walk… provided I can take the heat.

on the tread your not actually moving your bodymass, your just keeping your legs up with the belt at a constant pace. natural walking on the otherhand you are moving your bodymass and your moving at a pace that isn’t constant, that takes more energy and is harder on the muscles. walking a trail is much better for you then walking a treadmill in many ways =)

Well I can’t argue with you there, Canyon Jumper! :) Definitely better for my mental health as well!

If you’ve noticed, I layed off the Bernina group quite some time ago. Decided to “just sew” and dedicate myself to one thing, my blogging, no other forms of computer communication. (Well, emailing my freinds of course). Too much is too much. And, I’m soon going to downsize the number of blogs I follow, which probably isn’t too many if I were to compare myself to others. I’ll end up with a handful or so that I follow and that’ll be enough.

Do you and Jim have a date in mind that you’ll go looking for an RV spot to park longterm, a date that Jim needs to be set up to start work there?

Hi CJ, Life certainly is uncertain, isn’t it? I cant imagine moving after all of the work you have put into your home!

OK so, I have a bunch of sweet potatoes to cook and am interested in your recipe with garlic and blue cheese. Sounds really interesting, but I can’t find it posted anywhere. Can you direct me? Thanks!

I’m not real sure about the treadmill verses natural walking thing, but what Leon said makes sense. I wish I had someone to walk with me and a nice place like those trails to go to.

We have walking trails here, but their not close to home to make it convenient to go to, the drive to get to them alone would cost a small fortune in gas after awhile.

Cindy, no we don’t know yet at this point when we’ll need to go down there, sometime after the first of the year is about all we know. That could mean January 2nd, or April even. :)

Jamie, I’d rather have someone to walk with too. It takes me 15-20 minutes to get to the trail from my house… my truck gets 11mpg… so I hear you. That’s the reason really, I haven’t gone before. But I need some motivation, and the trails are it.

    Susan,
I cube up my sweet potatoes into chunks, toss with with enough olive oil to lightly coat, dice up some garlic (for 2 small potatoes, I use about 4 cloves) and chunk or slice up a purple onion, toss it all together with some salt and pepper and bake it in the oven for about 45 minutes at 400 degrees.

Remove from oven and toss with pecans and some crumbled bleu cheese. Yummy! :)

Yumm! Those sweet potatoes sure sound good. I was sorry to hear that you would have to leave your new house for awhile. To not know when would drive me nuts. You can just stay inside and sew, read good books and do airobics in front on the TV on hot Louisana days. I wish you good luck and hope you can write in your blog once in awhile. I’ve grown used to hearing what your up to.

It’s not the heat that will get to you…it’s the humidity!!! I used to live in Houston (and have family in Southern Louisiana) and it is as humid and hot as New Orleans. You will find that VERY early mornings the best time to go outside to work or exercise. The humidity is a little lower then. Beware the mosquitos!! They are their worse at dawn and dusk.

    Good Luck on your move!

Thanks CJ! We’ll have some tonight.

I guess I have been reading to many mystery novels…doesn’t walking alone out there make you nervous? I hope you have some mace with you. Be careful out there!

  11. On November 13th, 2009 at 10:42 am CJ Says:

Yeah a bit Marla, but in AR a concealed carry permit is literally that. You can carry concealed, but it CAN’T be out in the open, so that means wearing a jacket, and I get too dang hot.

Both kinds of walking are good for your body. For me, I love walking outdoors – it makes me happy. However I live in rainy Oregon. When there is a downpour outside (like from November to May), walking indoors on my treadmill makes me happy. You just can’t beat regular exercise!

  13. On November 13th, 2009 at 10:45 am CJ Says:

I love it cool weather Carol, but I can’t hardly stand it when it’s hot and sticky out. Today I half walked half jogged the 2.5 miles, funny that bothered my legs a lot LESS than just walking, they seem to need the stretch.

  14. On November 13th, 2009 at 6:10 pm Karen Says:

CJ, I love the picture of the trail you walked. It looks so peaceful.
I walk a 5 mile loop 2-3 times a week here in Kennesaw Nat’l Battlefield Park and rarely see more than a handful of people…of course I start at 7AM. Its just across a very busy street from our subdivision so I drive to the parking area less than 2 miles away & start there. I love these cool mornings and the leaves all over the trail. I don’t think I could survive in New Orleans–I hate heat & humidity. Ga summers are rough on me, but I love the winters. I’m a Minnesota girl melting in the south!
Your sweet potatoes are on my menu for next week. Please keep up your blog while you are gone–its my favorite to read–I get so many ideas from you & your energy inspires me.

  15. On November 14th, 2009 at 6:03 am CJ Says:

Whoa, 5 miles? I think my little legs would quiver, moan and quit on me. :)
Maybe I can work my way up to that… I certainly need it!

I hear you on the heat and humidity… Arkansas summers already do me in. We might need to upgrade our RV to a better insulated model.

I mentally can’t handle the treadmill. I know I’m not going anywhere! But I love to walk and run on trails. There is a huge difference.

    I relate to that Heather!
