Windows 7, Snow Leopard, Fusion 3.0…and Bernina

October28

Whew!  It’s taken me all DAY, but I finally got them all working.  What an upgrade!  It’s hard to say which component speeded everything up, or if it was just a combination of all of them, but let me just say…. sweeeeeet!

When Snow Leopard came out for the Mac, I did a clean install of it, and have been running with the default 32 bit version, because VMWare’s Fusion 2.06 couldn’t run with a 64bit operating system.

Yesterday, Fusion 3.0 was released, fully 64 bit compliant and Windows 7 ready!

Because we have three computers running Vista, I didn’t want to buy Windows 7 for each of them, so I picked up the family pack upgrade for three computers, knowing I might run into trouble with it since I planned on doing a clean install versus an upgrade.  Back in the “old” days, all you needed was your previous Windows version CD, but it doesn’t work like that anymore!

I did have to resort to using a Windows Registry hack to make the activation process except my upgrade license since I did a clean install, but it worked, so no problem.  Option #2 is what worked on my computer… I still have two more computers to go.

Fusion 3.0 and Windows 7 (64 bit) scream on my iMac now running in 64 bit mode, I can’t get over how much faster it is!  And yes, the Bernina Embroidery software DPV6, My Label, and EQ6 all run great!

But… installing the DPV6 software was painful.  I’m hoping my experience was an exception and not the rule.  Windows 7 did not recognize my dongle (Aladdin Hasp) and the regular driver download from the Aladdin website doesn’t work with Windows 7 either.  However, there is a Windows 7 driver you can download and install via the command line (2nd option on the page), and it works beautifully.  Once I installed it, I was able to install the Bernina software.

If you do not know how to do a command line install, please don’t ask me to try and walk you through it via an email, just grab some youngster and they’ll be able to assist you.  My grasp of the English language is not that good!

Boy, that gave me a headache just reading about it!! lol

I’m computer savvy but I think you have me beat by a country mile lol, plus I’m still learning new things all the time on my mac, I would love to be able to upgrade to Snow Leopard but cant on the mac I have. I’m hoping to get a new mac in the next year so that I can run windows based programs, I would love to have EQ6.

I have a hp laptop that came with vista 64 bit and I ordered the upgrade to windows 7 but haven’t got it yet. So would I be doing the upgrade? vs the clean install. Everything works fine now with my software and I haven’t had any problems with vista.

I haven’t had the computer but a few months and still haven’t got vista figured out completely. I was very happy with xp and I was told that windows 7 is very like xp.

Do I understand that the windows 7 may not recognize my dongle? Did I understand that you can go to the microsoft website and get the fix for that? Thanks alot. Kathy

Kathy, the Windows 7 “upgrade” DVD (which is what you will receive) is meant to used in just that way… pop the DVD into the drive from within Windows, and it will do the rest.

Probably if you take this route, you’ll have no trouble with your hasp driver either.

I don’t do “upgrades”. I always opt for a clean install. That means erasing the hard drive and starting from scratch. I absolutely do not recommend this method unless you know what you are doing.

If Windows doesn’t recognize the Aladdin hasp dongle, it’s unlikely that Windows will have a driver for it. I updated Windows immediately after installing it, and it couldn’t find a driver for the dongle. I had to download one from Aladdin directly, but the only Windows 7 driver they have up at this point requires you to install it from a command prompt.

CJ, After what I have been through with XP, Vista–upgraded to Win7, I’m ready to go Mac the next time I need a computer. I’m still having problems with the Corel part of V6 on my XP laptop. Do you need separate virus protection on the Mac? My computer”geek” said there were only about 2 viruses for Macs. Just think what the world could accomplish if the people creating viruses put their knowledge to useful pursuits??

  5. On October 29th, 2009 at 12:26 pm CJ Says:

Diane, to date, virus protection appears to be unnecessary for the Mac, although it’s not so much that the system is inherently safer as many would lead you to believe, but more that the market share of Mac users is small enough that it’s not a target… yet. McCaffee comes free with VMWare’s Fusion, so you are protected on the Windows side as well.

I am at the point to install DPV6 (an upgrade) on my Mac, running Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard), VM Fusion 3.0, and Windows 7. I do not have an earlier version of Bernina software installed because before Intel Macs, I had a separate Sony Vaio that I used.
My problem is that I can’t get it installed because it does not recognize the dongle/hasp, so I downloaded a file from Aladdin, choosing the second one on the link that you provided. Is it called HASP_SRM_runtime? That’s the one I downloaded. Or, am I in completely the wrong place?
I have it in my Downloads and am ready to install. What do I put in the command line?

  7. On November 19th, 2009 at 2:28 pm CJ Says:

haspdinst.exe -install, first having changed to the directory where the file has been extracted to. Don’t forget to extract it :)

    Chdir (Cd)

Displays the name of the current directory or changes the current folder. Used with only a drive letter (for example, chdir C:), chdir displays the names of the current drive and folder. Used without parameters, chdir displays the current drive and directory.

    Syntax

    chdir [[/d] [Drive:][Path] [..]] [[/d] [Drive:][Path] [..]]

    cd [[/d] [Drive:][Path] [..]] [[/d] [Drive:][Path] [..]]

    Parameters

/d : Changes the current drive or the current directory for a drive.

[drive:][Path] : Specifies the drive (that is, if it is different from the current drive) and directory to which you want to change.

[..] : Specifies that you want to change to the parent folder.

/? : Displays help at the command prompt.

    Remarks

    Working with command extensions

With command extensions enabled (that is, the default), the current directory path matches the folder names exactly as they appear on your hard drive, using the same uppercase or lowercase folder-name format. For example, if the folder on your hard drive is called C:\Temp, CD C:\TEMP sets the current directory to C:\Temp to match the folder-name format of the folder on your hard drive.

To disable command extensions for a particular process, type:

    cmd e:off

When you disable command extensions, chdir does not treat white spaces as delimiters. As a result, you can change to a subdirectory name that contains a white space without having to surround [Path] in quotation marks. For example, the following path changes to the \Start menu subdirectory:

    cd \winnt\profiles\username\programs\start menu

For more information about enabling and disabling command extensions, see cmd in Related Topics.

    Changing to the root directory

The root directory is the top of the directory hierarchy for a drive. To return to the root directory, type:

    cd\

Changing the default directory on one drive from another drive

To change the default directory on a drive different from the one you are on, type one of the following:

    chdir [Drive:\[directory]]

    cd [Drive:\[directory]]

To verify the change to the directory, type one of the following:

    chdir [Drive:]

    cd [Drive:]

The chdir command, with different parameters, is available from the Recovery Console.

    Examples

When you use it with a drive name, chdir displays the current directory for that drive. For example, if you type cd c: at the C:\Temp directory prompt, the following appears:

    C:\Temp

To change your current directory to a directory named Reports, type one of the following commands:

    chdir \reports

    cd \reports

To change your current directory to a subdirectory \Specials\Sponsors, type:

    cd \specials\sponsors

Or, if your current directory is \Specials, type the following command to change to the \Specials\Sponsors subdirectory:

    cd sponsors

To change from a subdirectory to its parent directory, type:

    cd ..

To display the name of the current directory, you can use chdir or cd without a parameter. For example, if your current directory is \Public\Jones on drive B, typing chdir the following appears:

    B:\Public\Jones

If you are working on drive D and you want to copy all files in the \Public\Jones and \Public\Lewis directories on drive C to the root directory on drive D, type:

    chdir c:\public\jones

    copy c:*.* d:\

    chdir c:\public\lewis

    copy c:*.* d:\

If you want to copy all files in the \Public\Jones and \Public\Lewis directories to your current location on drive D, type:

    chdir c:\public\jones

    copy c:*.* d:

    chdir c:\public\lewis

    copy c:*.* d:

Well I have another problem! I am running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit with Bernina EPV6. I had no problems installing and it seems to be running great. Problem is the USB to serial cable connecting my laptop to my Bernina Artista 180. I keep getting the “No link to serial port” error message. Is there any solution to this problem. I have looked for driver updates and cannot find any (Gigaware cable). I have checked with Microsoft’s site, no help. I have tried to locate a new cable that will work with Windows 7 and after 6 stores cannot locate one. HELP!

I found your blog via a search for Windows 7, EQ6, and MAC. This particular post was informative; thank you. Also, oh.my.stinkin.heck! at the setup and equipment you have in your sewing rooms. I’d give anything to just have a wee pinch of some of that. I do have one question for you though, for clarification purposes: When you installed/upgraded your Windows 7, did you install the 64bit version? I know you said you did a clean install and if I remember correctly from my Windows usage days you can NOT upgrade from a 32bit to a 64 bit, unless it is a clean install.

  12. On January 9th, 2010 at 6:22 am Anonymous Says:

Rae, I am indeed very lucky, my darling hubby spoils me rotten!

I installed the 64 bit version yes. That was why I had to do the registry hack, because I purchased an upgrade CD, not a full version. The software is identical, only the licensing agreement differs. In the past, you could perform a clean install with a full version or an upgrade version, but now you must either do a double install or hack the registry to do so. A google search will yield the necessary instructions.
